If you are in the habit of losing your keys and getting locked out of your home, office or car, KeyMe will now come to your rescue. This problem is quite common and in fact according to a survey done in 2012, by British insurance firm Esure, a person loses his/her keys up to nine times a day on an average. So, the company based in New York is trying to help those people by bringing a change in the way we duplicate our keys. There are almost 24 locations in the greater New York City area and a few others in Arizona, Florida and Arkansas where the company has branches. San Francisco is the most recent branch which launched past week.

Don’t Miss – 7 Must-Have Apps to Make your Home a Better Place to Live In

KeyMe App

As of now, KeyMe app is only available for iOS. You can download the app and use it to snap a picture of the keys of your home, car or office. After that the app will upload that image to the company’s system. With a press of a button, the app is notified to deliver your key in the mail. You can also go to any one of the bright yellow kiosks of KeyMe and get your new key printed in less than a minute.

If you just want to get a duplicate of your key, you can get it printed from the kiosk at a cost of only $3 to $6. But if you have lost the key and want to get a new one printed from the cloud-stored image, it will be a bit costly at $20.

As a part of the security measures of KeyMe, to avoid quick scans of the keys by other people, the company asks its users to get a picture of both sides of the key and also to use a sheet of paper in the background. The paper should be blank and white.

Choosing KeyMe App

If you are wondering why you should choose the KeyMe app, then the first reason is that you can save money. It will cost you less than going to a locksmith or buying a smart lock. You can easily get a new key at any point of time. However, once your key is lost, you cannot do anything. You have to duplicate your key using the app, before it gets lost.

Just like we use different digitized services like storing our credit cards in Apple Pay, using e-tickets and more, KeyMe has now digitized the key.

The company has not eliminated the use of keys but it has just provided a virtual means to take a back up of the key, thereby saving you from being locked out of your home, office or car. However, one question that arises is whether the method is secure enough. The company has assured that no crime has been reported till now where the keys of KeyMe have been used.

Are you going to use the KeyMe app? Do you think this is a good and secure method? We would love to hear your thoughts.
