Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge- Samsung’s Best Phone to Date?

Samsung is grabbing the eyeball with its latest releases Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. It seems Samsung is trying to regain its position in highly competitive smartphone market, which had dropped in 2014. If you are wondering whether Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge will be worth the money or whether you should opt for the low cost option of Galaxy S6, a review could help you out. In this post we have reviewed the smartphone which could help you to make your decision.

Don’t Miss – Vaio Makes a Buzz with its First Smartphone

The first thing that will attract you is the design of the Galaxy S6 Edge. The side has got curved screens which are not just a marketing gimmick. An actual design language has also been developed where, form gets priority than function.

The Edge runs on Android Lollipop but still has hardware and haptic keys under the screen. The physical Home button includes the fingerprint sensor. The heart rate monitor is placed at the back, under the LED flash; both located beside the camera. The camera protrudes out of the flat back.

There is a 3.5mm audio jack, a speaker grill and microUSB port at the bottom of the phone. The SIM card slot and infrared sensor is located at the top of the home. The volume and Power button are placed like all other Samsung devices, the former at the left and the latter at the right.

The bezels are thin at the sides of the screen due to the space taken up by the curved screens. Even the metal frame is also thin, but the phone feels sturdy when held in hand.

The Galaxy S6 Edge has been designed with metal and glass instead of an all-plastic one like the Galaxy S5. If you drop the phone from a height of approx 3-feet, the glass will not crack and it is scratch-proof as well.

The main display of Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is 5.1 inch and has a 2K resolution of 1440×2560 pixels i.e. 577 ppi. The panel is Super AMOLED and the greenish tinge and color saturation level has been toned down. In Settings, you can change the color if you like from the almost neutral one, which is given by default.

This is the only phone all across the globe which uses Gorilla Glass 4 on the back and front.

The Edge Screen

This is the display which makes the Galaxy S6 Edge stand out from all other smartphones. The Galaxy Note Edge had the Edge display only on one side, unlike this Galaxy S6 Edge which has the display at both the sides of the screen. However, at a time, it will work only on one side.

In Settings, under the Edge screen menu, you will get all the features of the display panel. Features include Yahoo-powered news, missed notifications, sports scores, stocks and Twitter trends. You can even download more features if you want from Galaxy Apps.

Use your finger on the spine of the smartphone to activate the Edge screen. Move between functions by swiping along the wraparound display panel. Set colors to your favorite contacts. This will make the entire edge display a notification panel which shows the relevant color when these contacts call you and your phone is faced downwards. The same works for emails and messages. You can also see time and other details on this Edge screen at night, even if your display is turned down.

However, other functions of the Edge screen are killed when the Galaxy S6 Edge is active.

Software & Hardware

The software has undergone a huge change. The number of preloaded apps has been reduced and has a minimalist look.

Smart Manager has been added to Samsung apps, which is same as the third-party apps that are found on Play Store. You will be able to see the space in use, battery level, used RAM and the security status of your phone. Apart from Google’s apps and Samsung’s own apps, you will find apps from Microsoft as well like OneDrive, Skype and OneNote. Instagram, Messenger and Facebook are preloaded.

For hardware, instead of using a Qualcomm processor like it does for its every smartphone, Samsung has used the Exynos-powered variant for Galaxy S6 Edge. The Exynos 7420 octa-core chipset is 4G enabled and has a clock speed of 2.1GHz. It is has 64-bit CPU. The chipset is said to perform 35 percent faster. Even battery consumption is said to be reduced by 35 percent.

There is 3GB RAM and DDR4 RAM. There is no support for microSD cards but it comes in 32, 64 and 128GB variants. The battery is non-removable for the first time, and supports both PMA and Qi charging standards.

A pedometer, a heart rate sensor and other fitness tracking features are present in the S Health app. Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge has a fingerprint scanner.

The Galaxy S6 Edge provides a smooth performance and moving from one task to another is easy. With 3GB RAM, games and apps can easily be run on the phone. With the 2K display, the games feel more detailed. With 10 minutes of charge, the battery moves from 0 to 20 percent, which means it can be actively used on an average, for 3.5 hours. Full battery charge takes 1 hour 15 minutes.

The phone will run for one day with full single charge and a battery of 2600mAh. The call quality is also amazing. It switches to 3G if Wi-Fi is not available. Knox security keeps your phone safe from data breaches.

The speakers offer quality sound along with the headphones. However, noise cancellation is not there in headphones.

The rear camera is 16MP and has f/1.9 aperture which comes with optical image stabilization. You will be able to focus on a moving object even when you are recording a video. The image quality is good and the details are captured fully when taken in well-lit areas. Even when you zoom at 2X, you will be able to take highly detailed photos.

The camera is extremely fast. All you need to do is just tap the area where you want the focus and in less than a second, your picture will be clicked.

Even the selfie you take has a pretty rich quality. Indoor shots are also good.

Bottom Line

The bottom line is that Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is an amazing top-end smartphone, if you want to turn heads. Function-wise it may lag a bit but it covers the drawback with its style. There is a pretty steep difference in price in Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, though the latter just adds an ‘edge’ to it literally.  If you are ready to spend those extra bucks, you can get the S6 Edge, which is the best smartphone with good performance and best camera right now.

The price of the smartphones varies with the retailer. You can check out the Samsung site where you can preorder either the Samsung Galaxy S6 or the S6 Edge. You can choose from different carriers or retailers to see the price. For Galaxy S6 Edge, the price varies from $299.99 to $814.99
