  • Ensure the eligibility of your computer for Windows 10

As mentioned earlier, Windows 10 is free for anyone who has Windows 7, Windows 8 or 8.1 on their desktops, tablets or laptops. If you don’t know the OS version of your machine, go to Microsoft’s website and find out.

To update, you have to be the administrator of your computer. This means you are responsible for setting it up.

  • Take Back-up

It is always recommended to take a complete back up of all the files on your computer. This is a precautionary measure in case anything goes wrong during the update process. You will still have your files intact if upgrade fails.

  • Get the Updated Version of your Current OS

Your machine should have all the updates for the current version of Windows that you have. If automatic updates are set, then you are ready for the upgrade. However, it is better to check again. To check whether your desktop, tablet, laptop or phone has the updated version, follow the steps:

On Windows 7, go to Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update

On Windows 8 and 8.1 go to Start > PC Settings > Update and Recovery > Windows Update

You will be notified of any available update for all the versions of Windows. Download and install them and then continue with the upgrade.

  • Windows 10 Prompt

Once your machine is updated, you have to wait to see a Windows icon which will pop up in taskbar. This tells you that you can reserve Windows 10. Now follow the directions that you see on screen and notify Microsoft that you want an update for Windows 10. Though not mandatory, to confirm the update, you might enter your email ID.

After you are done with the reservation process, you have to wait for Microsoft to send this latest version of OS to send to your machine. This may take several days or even weeks. You will be notified on your device, when the machine is ready for installation of Windows 10.

So, follow these steps and wait for your latest version of Microsoft’s OS.
