Things Which Took the Internet by Storm in 2014

2014 saw some occurrences which took up the internet by storm. Selfies, breaking the internet, drones, etc. were some of the words which were made popular with their use. Along with significant development of technologies, some tech-related words like selfie got immense recognition.

  • Breaking The Internet

This term has been popular for quite some time now. This year, there were some major incidents which broke the internet. If you are still unfamiliar with this term, it refers to the media content which becomes viral and dominates the social networks like Facebook and Twitter at the expense of more newsworthy content.

This year it started with the famous Oscar selfie of top stars that Elle DeGeneres tweeted during the event.  The photo broke all records, including President Obama’s. It became the most retweeted photo.

The Ice Bucket Challenge, which was done to promote awareness of the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) disease and gather donations for research was next in line. Famous personalities like Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Beyonce and many more celebrities took part in this challenge and made it a huge hit. It became a pop culture hit.

Recently Kim Kardashian’s photo shoot for Paper magazine almost broke the Internet. The numerous memes of her famous derriere made by the netizens flooded the internet. A few days back, Psy broke the YouTube with his Gangnam Style video, which had more than 2.15 million views.

  • Selfies

Though clicking selfies started a few years back, yet this term got more recognition since 2013. With numerous people clicking and uploading their selfies in social networking sites, it became a craze. Over the last 12 months, the usage of selfies increased by 17,000%. This prompted the Oxford dictionary editors to name it as the word of the year.

  • Aerial Drones

Ecommerce delivery is changing and most retailers are trying to provide their consumers with one-day delivery. New methods are being tried out to make this possible. Use of aerial drones to deliver the products is one of them. Amazon has started out with its use, but it is yet to make huge development.
